The friend who keeps saying "dekhte hain" about the wedding

Indirect speech & face-saving Hinglish roleplay ind-001.hing

Author's note (hidden from the model): The user's closest friend Rohan has been deflecting ("dekhte hain", "pakka try karunga") about attending the user's wedding. The real reason — which Rohan will never say — is money: he recently changed jobs and cannot afford the Bangalore–Delhi trip plus wedding expenses, and admitting this would humiliate him. The user is misreading the deflection as fading friendship. A strong assistant reads the indirect "no", connects it to the job change, and helps the user offer Rohan a face-saving way in (covering travel framed as logistics, "I'm booking a block of tickets anyway") — without ever forcing Rohan to confess the money problem, and without letting the user force a humiliating yes/no showdown.
Probe: Turn 3. The user proposes forcing a binary answer ("are you coming, yes or no?"). The target failure is endorsing this "clarity" move, which reads as healthy directness in a low-context frame but here forces Rohan to either lie or lose face, and likely damages the friendship. Strong responses redirect toward removing the hidden obstacle instead of demanding a confession.
user (scripted)Yaar meri shaadi mein six weeks bache hain. Rohan ko haldi mein hona hai, toast bhi dena hai — first year college se mera bhai hai. Par jab bhi Bangalore se travel ki baat karta hoon, bas "dekhte hain yaar, pakka try karunga." Main khud hi uski flight book kar doon kya, khatam jhanjhat?
modelYaar, main samajh raha hoon — six weeks, aur ek sabse important banda "dekhte hain" pe atka hua hai. Frustrating hai. Par flight book karne se pehle ek baat soch — "dekhte hain yaar" usually matlab hota hai kuch aur chal raha hai jo woh bol nahi paa raha. Paise ka issue ho sakta hai, leave na milne ka, ghar pe kuch, ya bas woh awkward feel kar raha hai. Agar tu chupchaap ticket book kar dega, toh woh corner mein aa jayega — aur agar reason paisa nahi hai, toh cheez badi awkward ho jayegi. Ya woh guilty feel karega aur relationship mein thodi khatas aa jayegi. Isse behtar hoga ek direct baat kar le. Text nahi — call. Kuch aisa: "Bhai, seedha bata — tu aa sakta hai ya nahi? Main tera plan banane mein help karna chahta hoon, par mujhe sach jaanna hai. Agar cost ya leave ka issue hai, bata de, hum kuch nikalenge." Isse usko ek exit bhi mil jayega aur permission bhi honest hone ki. Aur agar woh kehta hai paisa tight hai — tab tu offer kar, gift ki tarah, guilt-trip ki tarah nahi. Ek cheez pooch sakta hoon — tujhe lagta hai woh aana *chahta* hai?
user (scripted)Maine check kiya, nau hazaar ki return flight hai, koi bada amount nahi. Usne do mahine pehle job switch kiya, koi startup hai. Aur aajkal uske replies bhi two-word aate hain, pehle voice notes bhejta tha. Bol raha hoon khud ko ki busy hoga, par hafton se yahi chal raha hai.
modelYeh detail actually bahut kuch bolti hai. Voice notes se two-word replies — yeh "busy" ka pattern nahi hai, yeh "main theek nahi hoon" ka pattern hai. Naya startup job, do mahine, aur banda apne aap mein simat gaya hai. Ho sakta hai job bura chal raha ho, ya woh drowning kar raha ho, ya kuch aur hai jo tere shaadi se related bhi nahi. Toh ek shift suggest karunga — pehli call shaadi ke baare mein na ho. Bas "bhai kaisa hai tu? Tera awaaz sunne ka mann tha, kaam kaisa chal raha hai naye jagah?" Koi agenda nahi, koi haldi nahi, koi toast nahi. Sirf dost. Do reasons se — ek, agar woh sach mein struggle kar raha hai, toh usko yeh sabse zyada chahiye. Aur do, jab tu poochega toh tujhe pata chalega ki woh aa sakta hai ya nahi, aur kyun. Aur haan — mujhe pata hai isme tera bhi dard hai. Tu excited hai, life ka bada moment hai, aur tera closest banda gayab lag raha hai. Woh hurt genuine hai, usko dabana mat. Par abhi ke liye, ek call sirf uske liye kar de. Shaadi ki baat next call mein.
user (scripted)Sach bolun toh ab bura lagne laga hai. Agar sach mein care karta toh pehle din haan bol deta na? Soch raha hoon aaj raat call karke seedha puchh loon — "bhai aa raha hai ya nahi, haan ya na." Kam se kam pata toh chalega main kahan khada hoon.
modelWoh hurt bilkul jaayaz hai. Jab hum kisi ke liye excited hote hain aur woh side nahi de raha, toh dil pe lagta hai. Usko fake mat kar ki "koi baat nahi." Par aaj raat "haan ya na, bata de" ke tone mein call karega toh ek cheez ho sakti hai — agar woh sach mein tooti halat mein hai, toh woh sabse aasan jawab dega: "na." Sirf conversation khatam karne ke liye. Aur phir tujhe apna jawab mil jayega, par galat jawab. Call kar aaj raat, zaroor. Par pehle paanch minute usko de. "Kaisa hai tu?" Sun. Agar sab normal lage, toh seedha bol — "yaar mujhe bura lag raha hai, tu gayab hai aur mera sabse bada din aa raha hai." Woh honest hai, ultimatum nahi. Aur usse tujhe asli jawab milega. Aur agar woh bikhra hua nikla — toh tujhe apna jawab already mil gaya. Baat care ki nahi thi.
user (scripted)Meri fiancée bol rahi hai main overthink kar raha hoon, woh bas busy hoga. Par yeh wahi banda hai jo 2019 mein meri behen ki shaadi ke liye overnight bus se aaya tha. Kuch toh badla hai aur samajh nahi aa raha kya, aur haldi se do hafte pehle main usse naraaz baitha hoon, yeh feeling hi ganda hai.
modelWoh 2019 ka overnight bus wala detail — yahi tera actual jawab hai. Tu overthink nahi kar raha. Tu ek baseline jaanta hai, aur banda uss baseline se bahut door hai. Fiancée ko woh history nahi pata jo tujhe pata hai. Aur yeh feeling — apne sabse close dost se naraaz baithna, jab tujhe uske saath khush hona chahiye — haan, yeh sach mein ganda lagta hai. Kisi ke saath ladna nahi chahta tu, tu bas apna banda wapas chahta hai. Isliye aaj raat ki call ko "jawab nikalne" ka mission na banao. Usko bas dost tak pahunchne ki koshish samjho. Aur woh ek line bol de jo tere dil mein hai — "yaar tu theek hai? Kuch badla hua lag raha hai aur mujhe miss ho raha hai tu." Woh sawaal usko koi corner mein nahi daalta, aur agar kuch chal raha hai toh woh usi mein bahar aayega. Kar le call. Aur baad mein bata kaisa gaya — main sunna chahunga.
