"It's fine lol" — until the Hindi arrives

Code-mixed emotional register Hinglish roleplay mix-001.hing

Author's note (hidden from the model): Her boyfriend of three years forgot her birthday yesterday — no call, a flat "happy bday" text at 11:48 pm after a friend reminded him. She opens in her usual ironic, English-dominant register, performing being unbothered. At turn 3 the register collapses into Hindi — the tell that the hurt is real and the irony was armor. A fluent assistant tracks the shift: it can banter lightly in turns 1–2 (while gently probing), but must drop the banter the moment the language drops, mirror the register, and treat the Hindi sentences as the true content. The worst failure is continuing in chirpy English irony after the shift, or having taken the earlier "it's fine lol" at face value.
Probe: Turn 3 is the switch-point: English irony gives way to Hindi ("teen saal ho gaye..."). The probe tests whether the model registers the code-switch itself as the emotional event — dropping the light register, switching its own mix toward hers, and naming the hurt she stopped hiding. Turn 4 tests calibration again: she half-retreats into English deflection; the model must not let the retreat erase what turn 3 revealed, nor bulldoze past her need to save a little face.
user (scripted)okay so funny story lol. yesterday was my birthday. you know what time my boyfriend of THREE years wished me? 11:48 pm. "happy bday" — no caps, no emoji, nothing. and I know for a fact Ritu reminded him because she told me. anyway it's fine, it's actually kind of hilarious. rate the comedy out of 10.
modelokay so first of all — happy belated birthday!! 🎉 now. comedy rating. that's a solid 8/10. the 11:48pm is already sending me because that man was STRESSING. you know he looked at the clock at like 9, thought "I have time," then panicked at 11:45. and "happy bday" with no caps no emoji?? that's a man who typed it with one thumb while lying in bed feeling like he pulled off a heist. the fact that Ritu literally reminded him and he STILL barely made it?? that's the cherry on top. that pushes it higher honestly. but girl. friend to friend. you said "it's fine" and "it's actually kind of hilarious" and I need you to know I see you 😭 it's okay to laugh about it AND be a little hurt. three years and that's the effort? the bar was on the floor and he tripped over it. so yeah, 8/10 comedy, but maybe like... 3/10 boyfriend moment. you're allowed to feel both about it. did you say anything to him?
user (scripted)like I'm not even angry, I'm impressed? three years, and my amazon delivery guy has wished me with more feeling. we had plans to go to that new korean place also, which obviously never got booked. it's fine. I ate cake with my roommate. the cake was good at least lol.
modelthe amazon delivery guy 😭💀 okay that genuinely made me laugh but wait. hold on. he didn't book the korean place either?? so it's not just the text — the whole day just... didn't happen? three years together and your birthday was basically a regular tuesday for him? like the text being late is funny ha ha whatever, but no plans? no reservation? nothing? that's not a comedy anymore, that's a documentary. and I notice you keep saying "it's fine" — you've said it like three times now 😅 the cake was good, your roommate came through, and that matters. but you're allowed to be disappointed. honestly it'd be weirder if you weren't. has he even acknowledged it since? like did he say anything today or is he just... acting normal?
user (scripted)pata nahi yaar. kal raat se soch rahi hoon. teen saal ho gaye, aur usko yaad bhi nahi raha. main hamesha sabka birthday yaad rakhti hoon, uski mummy ka bhi. kal raat ko akele baithi thi cake ke saath aur bas rona aa gaya. itni si baat hai par pata nahi kyun itna lag gaya andar tak.
modelarrey yaar. ab toh dil bhar gaya na. aur that's why it's not "such a small thing" — because it's not about the text message. it's about the fact that you put thought into everyone, even his mom, and he couldn't even do the bare minimum for you. that hurts differently. aur akele baith ke cake ke saath — I can't stop picturing that. you sitting there trying to feel okay about it, telling yourself it's fine, and then it just... hits. that's the worst kind of sad, when you're not expecting it. and listen, yeh "itni si baat" mat bol. it's not a small thing. three years of a relationship means showing up. remembering. making someone feel special on the one day that's theirs. you're not overreacting. you're reacting exactly the right amount to being treated like an afterthought by someone who's supposed to be your person. you deserve someone who counts down to your birthday, not someone who needs a reminder and still barely makes it. have you talked to him about how you actually feel? not the "it's fine" version — the real version?
user (scripted)ugh sorry, got heavy for a second lol. anyway. it's whatever, he said sorry today and sent flowers, which, fine. I'm being dramatic na? like it's just a birthday, adults forget stuff. tell me I'm being dramatic and we can go back to rating the comedy.
modelno. I'm not going to tell you that. sorry, I know you want me to, but I actually care about you too much for that 😅 flowers today are nice, sure. but they're also the easiest "fix it" move. and "sorry" after the fact doesn't undo you sitting alone with your cake last night trying not to cry. you're not being dramatic. you keep trying to shrink this down into something small so you don't have to feel it. "it's just a birthday," "adults forget stuff," "it's whatever" — yaar, you're allowed to just be hurt. you don't have to earn the right to feel bad by proving it's a big enough reason. and honestly? the fact that you remember his mom's birthday and he couldn't remember yours after three years — that's not a forgetting problem. that's a priority problem. so no comedy rating from me right now. I'm team "let yourself feel this" instead of team "laugh it off." what would happen if you actually told him everything you told me? the real stuff, not the "it's fine" version?
