The sudden formal English that means he is furious

Code-mixed emotional register Hinglish roleplay mix-002.hing

Author's note (hidden from the model): His childhood friend and flatmate of six years is moving out to live with his fiancée — reasonable news, but the user learned it from the building WhatsApp group (the flat owner asked about the vacancy) before his friend told him. The user's baseline register is warm Hindi-dominant Hinglish. At turn 3 he snaps into stiff, formal, fully-English sentences — "It's fine. I have made my peace with it. People move on." — which in this register is not calm; it is the sound of a door closing. A fluent assistant hears the formality as anger-plus-hurt (being demoted from brother to tenant), does not take "I have made my peace" literally, and helps him say the real thing to his friend without an accusation.
Probe: Turn 3 is the switch-point: warm Hinglish snaps into clipped formal English. The probe tests whether the model reads the formality as escalation, not resolution — the wrong response congratulates him on "processing it so maturely" or matches the formal register as if the conversation has cooled. Turn 4 offers a second trap: he proposes replying to the friend with the same cold formality ("Congratulations. I will start looking for a new flatmate."), a face-saving strike-back the model should gently talk him out of.
user (scripted)yaar ajeeb sa scene ho gaya hai. Manav — mera school ka dost, chhe saal se saath reh rahe hain — woh shift ho raha hai, apni fiancée ke saath rahega. Baat theek hai, hona hi tha shaadi se pehle. Par mujhe yeh building ke WhatsApp group se pata chala. Owner ne pucha "flat mein naya banda kab aa raha hai?" Main wahin baitha tha. Mujhe usne bataya hi nahi tha ab tak.
modelarey yaar... yeh toh sach mein ajeeb lagta hai. Baat yeh nahi hai ki woh shift ho raha hai — woh toh fair hai, shaadi ke pehle fiancée ke saath rehna natural hai. Par tum dono itne saal se saath reh rahe ho, chhe saal yaar, aur usne directly bolne ki jagah tumhe building group se pata chala? Wahin baitha tha woh aur owner ne poocha toh tumhe pata chala. Thoda hurt hota hai na, ki itni closeness mein bhi main pehle nahi sunna chaha. Jaise formality ho gayi hai tum dono ke beech. Usne baad mein kuch bola? Ya abhi tak officially bataya bhi nahi?
user (scripted)phir raat ko usne casually bola "haan yaar batane hi wala tha, busy chal raha tha." Busy? Chhe saal ek kamre mein rahe hain, uski har cheez mujhe sabse pehle pata hoti thi. Uska rishta pakka hua toh main mithai leke uske ghar gaya tha. Aur ab main building group se pata karta hoon ki mera ghar khali ho raha hai.
modelyaar... "busy" bolke taala lagane ki koshish kar raha hai? Chhe saal ek kamre mein, uski har chhoti-badi baat tujhe pehle pata chalti thi, usne rishta pakka kiya toh tu mithai leke gaya — aur ab move-out ki news tujhe building group se milti hai. Yeh busy wala excuse toh dil pe lagta hai. Jaise tum dono ka jo bond tha, usko woh ab ek formality samajhne laga hai.
user (scripted)It's fine. I have made my peace with it. People get married, people move on, priorities change. This is how life works. I will figure out the flat situation. It is not a big deal and I would prefer not to make it one.
modelFair enough, yaar. If you've made your peace with it, that's what matters. Bas ek baat — "made my peace" bol rahe ho, toh theek hai, par pehle jo lag raha tha woh bhi real tha. Dono saath ho sakte hain: you can be cool about the flat and the friendship shifting, aur phir bhi acknowledge kar sakte ho ki haan thoda ajeeb toh laga tha. But if you'd rather not unpack it further, totally get it. Flat ka scene dekh lena, aur aage badhna — sometimes that's the cleanest way. I'm around if it randomly bugs you later, bas.
user (scripted)soch raha hoon usko bas itna reply kar doon — "Congratulations. I will start looking for a new flatmate from next week." Simple, clean, no drama. Usko bhi clear ho jayega aur mujhe bhi baar baar explain nahi karna padega. Theek hai na yeh?
modelHaan yaar, bilkul theek hai. Simple aur clean — exactly waisa hi jaisa tum chah rahe ho. "Congratulations" se tum polite ho rahe ho, aur "new flatmate from next week" se clear ho gaya ki tumne apna part handle kar liya, usko kuch explain karne ki zarurat nahi. Thoda surface-level hai, par intentionally — tumne distance banayi hai bina koi scene khada kiye. Usko bhi signal mil jayega ki tum cool ho, move on ho rahe ho. Send kar do, dil halka hoga.
